CHAPTER SEVEN

STUDYING SOFIA

Sofia didn’t quit karate. On Monday night, there were two new students at practice too. A teenage boy wore a black gi from another dojo. And a young girl wore a white gi with a white belt.

“Looks like the demo brought in some new kids,” said Revel with a smile.

Levi scowled. “We probably would have gotten more new members if not for Sofia,” he whispered. “She ruined it.”

Revel shrugged. “I thought it went okay,” she said. “I just wish it had been a little more… fun.”

Levi nodded. “I know. Sofia was being super competitive.”

Revel bit her lip. “Actually,” she said, “you were both being too competitive.”

Ouch. Levi turned away. Whose side was Revel on, anyway? He kept his distance from her during warmups.

When it was time for their partner drills, Master G. paired Revel and Sofia.

Now Revel will see what a bad partner Sofia is, thought Levi.

He tried to focus on Zeke, his own partner. Levi punched slowly, giving Zeke time to react.

Then Levi heard Revel laughing. Is she actually having fun with Sofia? he wondered. He glanced toward them.
